Anthony LaPaglia plays Frank Pesci, a man who is lucky to a fault at times; in this loosely true story of Frank being New York states first lottery winner. Danny Aiello plays Frank's father, a man with a gambling problem but who loves his family. All performances are first rate and the film will make you laugh and cry at times. This film has wonderful moments of both comedy and drama sprinkled throughout. LaPaglia and Aiello are simply magnificent together and have an amazing on screen chemistry. T
he life depicted here is Italian New York culture through and through but this movie also packs in a lot of heart and emotion. This is a Christmas movie of sorts, in the sense that it takes place around Christmas but the overall theme and story that drives the movie is the story of Frank and how he interacts with his family. The story revolves around the lottery but the family dynamic is always the center of attraction.
Both Anthony LaPaglia and Danny Aiello are so good in this film you will be entranced. This movie has 70s New York family culture in its pocket throughout. This is a terrific film in every way. The drama, comedy and emotion in this wonderful movie are evident at every turn of the camera. This is a fantastic piece of early 90s cinema that should be on the shelf of any serious film collector.
